CBS orders pilot starring Sarah Michelle Gellar

CBS picked up two drama pilots today, one of which could mark the long-awaited comeback of Sarah Michelle Gellar to primetime if picked up to series. Ringer is from writers Eric Carmelo and Nicole Snyder and is about a troubled young woman on the run who hides out by living the life of her wealthy twin sister, until she learns her sibling’s life has a bounty on it as well. It stars Buffy the Vampire Slayer – er, Gellar.

The other pilot is an untitled drama from writer Susannah Grant (The Soloist). It focuses on an ultra-competitive surgeon whose life is changed forever when his ex-wife dies and begins teaching him about life from the hereafter.

Oz

Continuing the Oz marathon that has been showing on HBO Zone. They’ve aired episodes every day for the past week or so, and I just finished the first season. I’m astonished by the number of recognizable actors in the show that moved onto shows like “The Wire”, “Law and Order SVU”, and “Dexter”.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, but this show was way ahead of it’s time. First episodes aired in 1997 and they set the bar for dramas like “The Sopranos” and “The Wire” on how to use incredibly violent and mature subject matter to capture the minds of viewers.

One thing I’ve noticed about “Oz” is their necessity to flashback. It happens almost every episode to help viewers remember what happened because there hadn’t been a show that introduced you to 20+ characters before, or so I think.

Ok, episode starting now.

Change in Subject

I’ve determined that blogging about “The Wire” exclusively is not a sustainable blog model for me, so I will be expanding the subject to be my television blog. “The Wire” is my favorite show, so you can expect to see plenty more about that show.

I’ll be blogging about other shows that I’ve watched which include, but aren’t limited to:

  • The Sopranos
  • Mad Men
  • Friday Night Lights
  • Arrested Development
  • Rome
  • Breaking Bad
  • Deadwood
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm
  • Top Chef
  • Dexter
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • No Reservations
  • Oz
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • Modern Family
  • ESPN’s 30 for 30
  • Daily Show with Jon Stewart
  • 30 Rock
  • Scrubs
  • Weeds
  • Entourage
  • Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel
  • The Walking Dead
  • Treme
  • How to Make it in America
  • HBO’s 24/7
  • Glee
  • True Blood
  • Rescue Me

There are probably other shows I’ve watched that I haven’t included here. Shows that I plan to watch and started yet include:

  • Battlestar Galactica
  • Justified
  • Firefly
  • Party Down
  • Lost
  • 24
  • Freaks and Geeks
  • Community
  • Sons of Anarchy
  • The Shield

People are always suggesting shows for me to watch, and while there are way too many to act on every suggestion, I always enjoy hearing what people watch. What else do you watch?

Edit: Added “Rescue Me”. Only saw the first couple seasons though, which I liked a lot and have on DVD. Very impressed the show is still on the air.

As you may have gathered, I’ve started re-watching The Wire, which, so we’re all on the same page, is the best show ever to be on television. It’s more of a novel than a tv show; many comparisons have been made to Dickens, but I prefer to think of it in terms of French realist fiction: Stendhal,…

Look at #5 and you’ve finally answered “Where the fuck is Wallace?” He’s all grown up but still playing a kid.
I would highly suggest “Friday Night Lights” to fans of “The Wire”. Season 1 in particular was one of the greatest seasons of television I’ve seen.
Anybody else watch FNL?

If this is your first time watching it, don’t worry. It gets better when you re-watch it.

After about 4/5 months…
LAST.
EVER.
EPISODE.

That moment when you’re reading a book and you read a sentence that contains the title of the book.

I got this feeling when you watch the opening credits to every episode of “The Wire” and then you finally see it as a part of the story. Like in Season 1 when Bodie decides to break the surveillance camera. The scene was used in each of the different opening credits in black and white. Then you realized in the Season 5 intro, they had filmed the scene in color the whole time.
